My name is Lee Shapiro. I am a Psychologist and founder of Traversegroups.
About Me
I grew up in New York City on the Lower East Side. My parents were teachers, I went to two different private Quaker schools and graduated from Vassar College in 1995. I received a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Teacher’s College, Columbia University and my Doctor of Psychology (PsyD), from the Ferkauf School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. My dissertation was on Post-College Transition. During my doctoral training I worked at both New York University and Marymount Manhattan College’s counseling centers, as well as the Forensic Service of Kings County Hospital. I did my Internship at North Central Bronx Hospital. After completing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital I took a staff psychologist position at Woodhull Hospital where I worked in both the adult outpatient clinic and Inpatient service from 2007 – March 2013. In June of 2010 I completed the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society’s, “The One Year Training Program”, and am qualified to be a Certified Group Psychotherapist. I have been working in private practice in downtown Manhattan since 2009.
Individual Psychotherapy
I provide individual psychotherapy to adolescents and adults. Broadly speaking my orientation is psychodynamic, but I’m not a big fan of orthodoxy or reverence and I’m reluctant to assume an affiliation that defines me. I’m a native New Yorker, a humanist with a pragmatic bent, and ardent Knick fan, and currently living on the Lower East Side. I seek to be my genuine self as a therapist, friend, loved one and traveler. Should you decide to work with me, we will look at your life together and focus on what what is important. Our work together will be meaningful and vibrant. My work can be present focused and involve problem solving and I am also comfortable looking back at your life helping you to better understand patterns of relating and communicating that are impacting all important aspects of your life, including therapy. Feelings are essential, and cannot be excluded from life or therapy. I love to look at dreams, but certainly don’t require that you share them with me.
My office is located conveniently located in Union Square on 5th Avenue between 16th and 17th Street. I accept the following Insurances: Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Oxford, Aetna, Consolidated Health Plans (NYU), and Cigna. I provide a sliding scale for people that do not have insurance or would prefer to pay out of pocket. I am also able to fill out paperwork to allow you to be reimbursed out of network. Please email me or call if you would like to discuss the possibility of working together.
Traversegroups 2.0
While working as a Psychologist at Woodhull Hospital for 6 years I ran six groups a week on the inpatient psychiatric units. I provided people who were psychiatrically hospitalized a safe space in which they could reflect and share. It wasn’t always seamless, but it was often quite meaningful and I learned a lot. In addition to my clinical experience I also completed the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society’s One Year Training Program, which deepened my theoretical understanding of group dynamics and group psychotherapy.
I think group experiences are incredibly important, and that harnessing the power that is generated by group dynamics can benefit group participants tremendously. Covid 19 has created a radical transformation. I will soon be launching a new version of Traversegroups to help recent graduates navigate the difficult terrain created in the wake of Covid 19.
